The Life of Paul Week 12

Sep 20, 2026  •  Pastor Sam Tollett

In this sermon from Acts 13:42-52, Pastor Sam walks through the story of Paul and Barnabas preaching and draws out six key characters whose experiences mirror those of people sitting in church today. He identifies Paul as the preacher, Barnabas as the key volunteer, the Jews as lifelong believers raised in the faith, the converted Gentiles as first-generation believers, the Gentiles as those who have not yet surrendered to Christ, and the Jewish leaders as those who protect religious tradition at all costs. By mapping these characters to modern church life, Pastor Sam helps the congregation see themselves in the story and understand how each group responds to the gospel message.

The central tension of the sermon is the jealousy and opposition that arose when Paul's message drew massive crowds, especially non-believers. Pastor Sam challenges the congregation to examine whether they, like the Jews, have allowed pride, tradition, or self-righteousness to make them unwelcoming to outsiders. He also delivers a direct call to salvation, emphasizing that God has placed the free gift of eternal life on the table for everyone. Rejecting that gift is a personal choice, not God's doing. Drawing from Romans 10:9-10 and James 3:15, he urges anyone who has not yet accepted Christ to do so, reminding them that tomorrow is not guaranteed.
